12 MLS All Star Game Recap

On Wednesday July 25, the City of Chester PA hosted the Biggest Soccer Event of the year, the 2012 MLS All Star Game which featured the MLS all Stars playing the defending UEFA Champions League Chelsea F.C. This was first time an all-star event was played in the Philadelphia area since the 2002 NBA All-Star Game. The All star events that lead up to the game were the following:

On Monday Both MLS & Chelsea have a Training day at Philadelphia Eagles Practice faculty which is the NovaCare Complex located around the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, Following the Training day, Mayor of Philadelphia threw a All Star Welcome Party at Hotel Palomar Philadelphia, Both MLS & Chelsea Reps were at the party, so was Mayor of Chester PA John Linder, Mayor of Philadelphia Michael Nutter, MLS Commissioner Don Garber, Chelsea Director/Club secretary David Barnard & Chelsea Team Ambassador Graeme Le Saux.

On Tuesday, Both MLS & Chelsea have a Training day at the site of the All Star Game which is PPL Park (Home of the Philadelphia Union) in Chester PA, after the Training day it was the Big MLS All Star Game Press Conference Took place at the Independence Visitor Center, Right next to the Liberty Bell. Chelsea were the 1st ones to meet with the media, after Chelsea meet with the media, the MLS All Stars & Chelsea signed the Big Soccer ball that was going all round Philadelphia to promote the MLS All Star Game, after they signed the ball, the MLS All Stars did their portion with the media. Some of the things that were said in the all star game press conference were the following:

Chelsea Players: “Excited to play against Thierry Henry, Landon Donovan & David Beckham”

Chelsea manager Robert DiMatteo about Players asking for Day off in Miami: “The players have not asked for a day off”

Landon Donovan about International Teams facing the MLS All Stars: “These All Star Games against International Teams (Manchester United, Chelsea & Everton) are a lot of Fun”

MLS All Star Coach Ben Olsen on starting lineup: “it’s hard to decide the starting Lineup for the players for those who played this past week & have games later this week”

Gameday Wednesday, Chelsea were the first ones on the Pitch to Warm-ups for the game, Followed by the MLS all stars, the Chelsea fans were in full force, so was the Philadelphia Union fan base (Sons of Ben). 2011 Finalist of American Idol Pia Toscano Signing 2012 MLS All Star Game National Anthem. MLS All stars starts with the Ball, The MLS Scores 1st on Goal by Chris Wondolowski at the 21st minute, The Philadelphia Union Carlos Valdes starts Warming Up at the 25th Minute to enter All Star Game. Chelsea Ties game at 1 in the 32nd Minute on Goal by John Terry, Union Carlos Valdes enters the game in the 35th Minute replaces Aurellen Collin. At the half, game tied at 1, amazing Fireworks show at halftime, in the 2nd half Chelsea starts with the ball, Chelsea takes 2-1 lead on Goal by Frank Lampard in the 59th minute, MLS starts putting the pressure on Chelsea, in the 63rd minute, the Philadelphia Union Fan base Sons of Ben are Chanting for Union Michael Farfan to enter the All Star Game. The MLS All Stars Tie Game at 2 on Goal by Chris Pontius in the 73rd Minute, Philadelphia Union Michael Farfan enters All Star Game in 74th Minute Replacing David Beckham. Latter on in the game, it was announced that 19,236 were in attendance for the 2012 MLS All Star Game which Set a new Attendance Record at PPL Park. The referee added 2 additional minutes before it went to Penalty kicks, MLS take 3-2 Lead in Extra Time by goal Eddie Johnson, the final whistle blows, the MLS All Stars Beat Chelsea 3-2. At the Post Game Press Conference, it was announced that Chris Pontius was named the 2012 MLS All Star Game MVP as voted by the media. Below are some Post Game quotes from Chelsea & MLS All Stars:

Landon Donovan & Thierry Henry Being Interviewed After the All Star Game

Chelsea manager Robert Di Matteo on MLS All-Star team showing tonight: “They have some good players. It was a good representation of probably the League. Some of the players we know already and they showed their quality tonight. It was a good test for us.”

Chelsea FC Head Coach Roberto DI Matteo On loss to MLS All-Star Team: “We’re disappointed with the result. We’re always looking to win, we want to win. We were a bit stretched in the second half.”
