FBI Fires Agent Peter Strzok Over Anti-Trump Text Messages

Strzok exchanged the messages with then-FBI lawyer Lisa Page, with whom he was having an affair. His lawyer said he was sacked late Friday by FBI Deputy Director David Bowdich.

President Donald Trump immediately welcomed Strzok's firing and used the occasion to lash out once again at the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into whether there was any collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump election campaign.

House Republicans grilled Strzok for hours last month as they argued that the text messages with Page coloured the outcome of the Clinton email investigation and undercut the FBI's investigation into Russian election interference.

Reminder that Strzok himself offered a very effective rebuttal to the claim that Trump is making in that tweet: If he wanted to stop Trump's election, why didn't he try to stop Trump's election?

"Just fired Agent Strzok, formerly of the FBI, was in charge of the Crooked Hillary Clinton sham investigation". No Collusion, No Obstruction - I just fight back!' he said.

Strzok first promoted the page from his newly minted Twitter handle-the authenticity of which was verified by The Daily Caller. The FBI, which does not usually comment on personnel actions below the executive level, had declined to comment. The former counter-intelligence agent had been reassigned to the FBI's human resources department after he was removed from Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation.

"The list of bad players in the FBI & DOJ gets longer & longer".

The FBI had been reviewing Strzok's employment after the politically charged text messages were discovered previous year.

Strzok, a 22-year veteran of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, had already been a frequent target of President Trump's Twitter tirades.

Mr Trump has said the text messages showed that Mr Mueller's investigation is a hoax.

An inspector general's report released in June found no evidence that Strzok's political views influenced his actions, but did conclude that the texts spoke to a "willingness to take official action to impact the presidential candidate's electoral prospects".

It is not clear why Strzok, who was formally fired Friday, was dismissed at this time.

Peter Strzok, the anti-Trump FBI official at the center of the "deep state" allegations, opened a new social media account and posted a link asking for donations from the public after being fired Monday.
