Jim Furyk won't commit to Tiger Woods as Ryder Cup at-large pick

"That was pure tenacity - and that's the new Tiger Woods".

"He's playing very well, there's a lot of folks out there probably think he can help us", said Furyk, a nine-time Ryder Cup star.

"I played hard", he said after finishing the tournament at 14-under 266.

Tiger Woods last won a major golf title in June 2008, when he beat Rocco Mediate in a playoff at Torrey Pines to win the US Open.

Brooks Koepka vaulted into first place in the standings with his third major title, and will be joined by Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson at next month's event at Le Golf National in Paris.

Furyk posed with Yankees manager Aaron Boone and a No. 18 jersey in honor of the 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup team, as well as Yankees centerfielder Aaron Hicks and Mets infielder Jeff McNeil. "They definitely made me question it there for a bit, for sure".

The sixth and 10th holes played as the joint toughest in the final round, the par-three sixth to an average of 3.35 and the par-four 10th to an average of 4.35.

He has now won three majors over the past 14 months - and joins Jordan Spieth, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Woods as the only US players since World War II with three majors before turning 30. His record is played 33 matches, won 13, lost 17, halved three. My putting was OK but God, I hadn't played in two years. He's been really a big help to our captains in both 2016 and 2017 from a strategy perspective, from a personnel, personalities, and also really serving on the golf course. "I mean, I could snap a club in two seconds and not think anything of it".

Woods could not get in the 60s in his opening round for a second year in a row at Augusta, but a strong second day showing of 66 left him seven under, three off leader Rory McIlroy. "So as a captain [early in 2018], I'm scratching my head and I'm anxious".

Turkey's central bank promises 'all necessary measures' to save its financial system
On Monday, benchmark stock indexes in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai were all down more than 1.5% in late morning trading. Banks weren't far behind, with Commonwealth Bank down 0.6 per cent at $74.94, Westpac down 0.5 per cent at $29.41.

Tiger was in contention over the weekend for the second straight major, and had Koepka not birdied the last three holes of the front nine, there is no doubt in my mind that Woods would have won.

After finishing two shots behind Koepka at Bellerive, he said: "I'm just very pleased at what I've done so far and now to be part of the Ryder Cup conversation, going from where I've come from to now in the past year, it's been pretty cool".

Vintage Tiger Woods would bring nothing but eyeballs to the Ryder Cup.

But as brilliant as the 28-year-old was and is, it was inevitably Woods's resurrection that created the biggest stir.

Here are the eight players who are on the team now. "Those are the type of players you want in a Ryder Cup".

The owners of the championship can choose to be happy with their lot as the fourth of four, or they could be bold and, say, every Olympic year take it outside of the United States and use the status of the championship to "grow the game" around the world.

"I'm excited, and I know these eight players are excited as well", Furyk said at Monday's press conference officially announcing the top eight spots.

What remains is for Furyk to determine his four captain's picks.

Furyk was not willing to say what appears certain for everyone else: Woods will be in France with golf clubs for the September 28-30 matches.
