The State of IL is reporting its first death this season due to an infection of West Nile virus.

Officials say the best ways to avoid mosquito bites are to get rid of standing water and to wear insect repellent.

However, it can develop into a severe illness and cause permanent damage to a person's central nervous system.

- Use an EPA-approved repellent on skin and clothes - always follow the instructions on the label. Be sure to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and trousers at these times, or consider staying indoors during these hours.

Use screens on open windows and doors.
