The typical tradition is to keep the flag lowered until the body reaches its final resting place, which in the case of John McCain would be next Sunday when the Senator is expected to be buried at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

US Flag Code states that flags be lowered "on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress".

President Donald Trump also passed up several chances to comment on McCain, with whom he had frequently traded criticism.

Knoller notes that Mr. Trump did not issue a formal proclamation on McCain's death. Trump tweeted condolences to McCain's family but made no reference to the Arizona senator.

In the years since, McCain has been Trump's loudest - and often a lonely - Republican critic, especially as the president disrupted America's longtime alliances.

John Kasich called the White House's decision shameful.

Trump shared a sympathetic message across social media platforms, stating "our hearts and prayers are with you", however alongside the message on Instagram was an image of himself.

Col. Tran Trong Duyet, who ran Hoa Lo Prison while McCain was held there for almost six years, told the paper that he grew to admire him during the time he was in captivity.

During Trump's 2016 presidential campaign - and after McCain's cancer diagnosis, which would prove to be fatal - Trump blasted McCain for being a prisoner during the Vietnam War.

The U.S. mission in Vietnam plans to launch a fellowship in honor of McCain for a young Vietnamese leader committed to public service to travel on a U.S. study tour.

Duyet added that following McCain's release, when he became a US Senator, "he and Senator John Kerry greatly contributed to promote Vietnam-US relations, so I was very fond of him". McCain served in the chamber for six terms, most recently as chairman of the Armed Services Committee.

McCain and Trump had a contentious history.

John McCain was interrogated, beaten and tortured in a Hanoi prison for five years. The current president's likely absence could not be more conspicuous.
