Former Arizona US Sen. Jon Kyl to replace John McCain

Kyl served four two-year terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before he was first elected to a six-year stint in the Senate in 1994.

Kyl's appointment means the Republican attorney who had been guiding President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, through the confirmation process will now have a vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation.

Kyl, a Republican who retired from the Senate in 2012 to become a lobbyist and spend more time with his family, is now shepherding President Donald Trump's nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Jon Kyl is a dear friend of mine and John's". "There is no one in Arizona with the stature of Senator Jon Kyl". Kyl's presence in the Senate will give GOP leaders a more of a cushion as they whip votes. Since his retirement, he has worked as a lobbyist for pharmaceutical and defense companies, among others, records show. Although Kyl has not been as fiercely outspoken, he has registered more concern about the president than most sitting Republican senators. Much of it is boorish.

Kyl is well-respected in Arizona and has been able to avoid numerous battles with activists that complicated McCain's career and that of the state's other senator, Jeff Flake, who is retiring because his feud with Trump made his re-election impossible. Kyl said he would not be a candidate in 2020. Still, he said he was honored to be supporting Kavanaugh's nomination. "Kyl yet. What I have gotten is a commitment to serve Arizona through at least this session of Congress, and it's my hope that he serves longer", Ducey said.

His timeline stoked uncertainty about the future of the seat.

But he only committed to serve until January 2019, raising the prospect of requiring Ducey to again appoint a replacement until the seat is up for re-election in November 2020. Earlier this year, a strategist familiar with the governor's thinking said that Ducey was interested in finding someone who could keep the job, rather than serving as a placeholder.

"He is a man without comparable peer", Governor Doug Ducey told reporters in Phoenix, with Kyl at his side. Ducey faces reelection in November and is favored to win a second term. "No", he said. "And I don't wish I was still there".

McCain died August 25 of brain cancer.

In remarks last week at a memorial service for McCain at the Arizona State Capitol, Kyl also made what many interpreted as a swipe at Trump's overly friendly relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The campaign for his seat is shaping up as one of the most competitive midterm contests.

She's now locked in a tough campaign against Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema for the Senate seat Flake is vacating. Democrats control 49 seats, including two independents who align with them.
