That's the same deficit Europe faced in 2012 at Medinah when it produced the largest comeback on foreign soil. Thomas Bjorn picked him anyway, saying he was like the captain of a football team. "All of those are big events, starting with the Open Championship", said the 42-year-old. The last time they won away was in 1993.
They've been dubbed both "Moliwood" and "Tomminari" after gelling brilliantly for Bjorn. He's played a total of 36 matches over eight appearances but won only 13. The inability to find a suitable Ryder Cup partner for Woods is extremely puzzling. His personal record is just dire.
Europe already was assured the 14 ½ points it needed because they were guaranteed halves in two matches. Woods' name was surging up the world golf rankings, too. Building on that in the morning fourballs on the second day, they then triumphed in the first three games on day two.
Reed will be in the 10th match out on the course on Sunday against Tyrrell Hatton, and United States captain Jim Furyk still has hopes that "Captain America" can still find his game at the ideal time.
Bjorn has little to worry about, really, heading into those head-to-head encounters.
Phil Mickelson didn't even play.
The day started positively enough for the Americans, as Justin Thomas won the 18th hole to secure a victory in a seesaw opening match against Rory McIlroy. It never materialised. At one point, in fact, Europe were up in all four matches again. Most sports journalism is inherently supposed to be unbiased, but, to put it plainly, that will never be the case for this particular event.
McIlroy and Sergio Garcia led the way. "I think, other than the first hole, was the first time I led the match".
Undeniably spent after the emotion of his win a week ago and an 18-tournament schedule, Woods would not go so far as to say he was hurt or diminished, hinting only that something was missing in France. He must have been gutted about them ending up in a rematch.
Protesters confront Flake after he announces Kavanaugh vote
Heitkamp also voted Gorsuch onto the Supreme Court last year and faces an uphill election in her home state this year. The formal vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation will likely take place early next week.
Patrick Reed took the U.S. tally to 10.5 by beating Tyrrell Hatton but Europe's Alex Noren holed a long putt on the 18th to ensure Bryson de Chambeau couldn't add any more.
"For me, it's been a lot of golf for a short period of time".
The 14-time major champion suffered only his second singles defeat in the match-play showdown with a 2 and 1 loss to Jon Rahm as Europe charged to victory.
Spieth and Thomas definitely pulled their weight on Saturday.
They were 5 up at the turn over Woods and Bryson DeChambeau, and a brief rally only delayed the inevitable. "They made a bunch of birdies, and we didn't answer".
Garcia missed the cut at all four majors this year.
It got worse for the Americans.
