Tightening Texas race boosts Democrats’ hopes of taking U.S. Senate

Cruz has consistently attempted to paint O'Rourke as too liberal for Texas' more conservative electorate that hasn't elected a Democrat statewide since 1994.

Poll numbers for Cruz and O'Rourke have been tightening in the race's final weeks, though the latest Quinnipiac University poll showed Cruz with a nine-point lead. A representative for O'Rourke's campaign did not respond to ABC News' request for comment on Cruz's assertion.

The poll also showed Florida's Republican governor, Rick Scott, with a 1-percentage-point lead over Democratic U.S. Senator Bill Nelson.

Nelson said that he is surprised by the backlash since he's supported Democratic candidates his whole life. "Let's work together to lead the way on healthcare, education, and immigration reform".
