A community is in mourning after an unimaginable tragedy - three siblings were killed while walking to their school bus on Tuesday morning. Police say two of the children were 6-year-old twins, WSBT reported, and they were with their 9-year-old sister.

Xzavier, Mason and Alivia attended Mentone Elementary School.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Maverik and his family.

Police told WNDU the stop-arm was out at the time of the crash, and the vehicle that hit the children was headed in the opposite direction.

Shepherd was being held at the Fulton County Jail with a surety bond of $15,000. "When the children's father had to make identification of his children, that was just gut-wrenching. There are no words", she said.

"He didn't lose one kid, he lost all of his kids", said their uncle Elgin Ingle. "They were non-stop, happy, go-fast, jumpy boys".

Shepherd's crumpled pickup truck could be seen where the wreck happened for several hours after it happened. "I wish she could've saved her brothers, but she's still a hero". We have learned of three student fatalities and one student seriously injured and airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital as they were hit by a vehicle while boarding their bus.

The boy was conscious and speaking to emergency workers before he was airlifted to the hospital, Slocum said.

The students had the right of way as they crossed the street, police said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to have a team in Rochester today to investigate the wreck, since it involved a school bus.

The school said it has deployed counselors to help staff, students and parents.

Gov. Eric Holcomb said in a statement that he and his wife, Janet, were mourning the students' deaths. I ask Hoosiers around the state to join us by sending your deepest prayers for the strength needed to endure such a time, ' he said.
