Antimicrobial Resistance a Global Health Emergency

From 2019, antimicrobial consumption data will be integrated into WHO's Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (GLASS) IT platform to provide a single place for data on both consumption and resistance.

In recognition of the 2018 US Antibiotic Awareness Week and World Antibiotic Awareness Week, 12-18 November, America's pig farmers want consumers to realise the continuous improvement and antibiotic stewardship efforts underway. In 1928, the first antibiotic penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming, a professor at St Mary's Hospital in London.

Head of microbiology at the University of the West Indies, Dr Alison Nicholson, highlighted the magnitude of the problem faced when bacteria become resistant to antibiotics.

One of the main causes of antibiotic resistance is overusing antibiotics and prescribing them inappropriately.

While it is positive to see more Australians aware of antibiotic resistance alongside a reduction in inappropriate prescribing, Mr Morris says the research also indicates many people lack awareness of the potential consequences antibiotic resistance can have on their health. "As we strive to ensure that antibiotics are rightly used in the community and in health-care settings, one sector alone will not solve the problem".

"We are already seeing a growing number of infections, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and gonorrhoea becoming harder to treat as the antibiotics used to treat them become less effective".

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and World Health Organization (WHO) have expanded their partnership to counter antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through the addition of the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment).

"Everyone has a part to play in reducing antibiotic resistance".

Bacteria can become resistant when patients use antibiotics they do not need, or do not finish a course of treatment, giving the half-defeated bug a chance to recover and build immunity.

Don't keep leftover antibiotics to use next time you are sick.

The misuse and overuse of antibiotics by Jamaicans is costing the Government millions of dollars. The week of activities, under the theme 'Antibiotic Stewardship: A Call to Action!', running from November 11-16, is meant to help increase awareness of AMR. This is a wrong notion since viral infections can not be cured by bacterial antibiotics.

There is now a global shortage of old antibiotics, which may still be able to treat the majority of common bacterial infections. "Always insist on a licensed pharmacist to dispense the drug and give you the right prescriptions, where the professional is unavailable please walk away", Executive Secretary of the PSGH, Rev. Dennis Sena Awitty advised.

Prevent infections by regularly washing hands, preparing food hygienically, avoiding close contact with sick people, practising safer sex, and keeping vaccinations up to date. More Australians reported awareness of the term "antibiotic resistance' in 2017 (74%) compared to 70% in 2014".
