Lowe's stores in US states including New York, Texas and California and Rona outlets in Ontario, British Columbia and other Canadian provinces are being shut, Lowe's said. Most associates at theses stores will be extended opportunities to transition to a similar role at a nearby Lowe's store.
While there are closures across the country, stores in Saskatchewan will not be affected. In all, 20 stores will be shut down in the U.S. The U.S. big box retailer acquired Quebec-based Rona Inc. "Everything will be done to ensure a smooth transition until the store is closed, including through transfers of eligible employees to other locations whenever possible", said Andrea Wong, media relations with RONA Canada.
Lowe's said affected US employees will have the opportunity to transfer to similar roles in nearby locations.
Lowe's has been struggling to keep up with its larger rival Home Depot.

Earlier this year, Lowe's gave the reins to a home improvement veteran to turn around the company. In July, Lowe's announced it was eliminating the positions of chief operating officer, chief customer officer, corporate administration executive, and chief development officer. The priority for Lowe's right now, he said, is improving basic "retail fundamentals".
