Senate and House GOP Pick Congressional Leaders - as Showdown Over Pelosi Simmers

Ernst, first elected in 2014, is the first woman to serve in Republican leadership since 2010. McCarthy said on CNN that the party that wins control of the White House usually loses some seats in the next election cycle. "The American people demand it - thats what they want, thats how they voted, and we need to listen to them".

In McCarthy, Republicans have boosted one of the party's strongest fundraisers and campaign strategists to replace retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also has an encyclopedic knowledge of Republican members' families and districts.

Next in line for the GOP leadership hierarchy in the new Congress is Rep. Steve Scalise, the current No. 3 House Republican, who successfully vied for the position of minority whip in the new Congress. Scalise, as majority whip, gained a higher national profile after he was injured previous year in a shooting during a Republican congressional baseball practice.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (puh-LOH'-see) is challenging the Democrats who are fighting to stop her from becoming speaker to put forward an alternative.

"Unless it is a miracle, we are going to vote against them", Mr. Palmer said.

In a statement following last week's election, she said the committee under control of Democrats will focus on addressing climate change, "defending the scientific enterprise from political and ideological attacks" and reestablishing the "the credibility of the Science Committee as a place where science is respected and recognized as a crucial input to good policymaking".

As minority leader, McCarthy will become the most visible face of opposition to the incoming Democratic majority.

A young National Basketball Association star's gruesome ankle break has left teammates and opponents in tears. LeVert was racing back to try to block a shot and his leg bent awkwardly when he landed.

While the Republican Party did make some progress towards gender parity, with GOP Representative Kristi Noem set to become South Dakota's first female governor after defeating Democrat Billie Sutton in a tight election race, it did not see the same level of historic firsts that the Democratic Party enjoyed.

One of the newly elected representatives, Elaine Luria, a former Navy officer and engineer who operated nuclear reactors, won a Virginia House race where climate change was a key campaign issue.

McCarthy told reporters before the party elections that "we've got a plan" to counter Democrats in the next two years. Mitch McConnell was reelected Majority Leader of the Senate and New York Sen Chuck Schumer is again the Minority Leader.

Among them is Ayanna Pressley in the MA 7th District, who is the first black woman to be elected to Congress from her state.

Many Republicans side with Jordan's theory, which is that Republicans, despite a GOP monopoly on power in Washington, lost because they didn't "do what we said" - including delivering Trump's priority to build the border wall with Mexico. Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, the Freedom Caucus chairman, called it a "gentlemanly" debate.

McCarthy made that argument too, lawmakers said, suggesting that those who lost their races - or came close to losing - didn't work hard enough to sell the GOP's message. However, suburban voters shifted to the left this election. I wish we had more progressive voters in Florida. It would benefit them by electing other women who share their values and will fight to promote public policy that empowers women.
