Two Muslim women first to win congressional seats

The other, Democrat Rashida Tlaib, easily won a race for Michigan's 13th District on Tuesday in which she did not have a Republican challenger.

Both women are critics of US President Donald Trump, and Tlaib also faced arrest two years ago for disrupting Trump's speech in Detroit. "It became about the changing the narrative" surrounding immigrants and women of color who run for office.

Omar's victory amounts to another first: She and Michigan's Rashida Tlaib, who also won Tuesday night, will become the first two Muslim women to serve in Congress. Ilhan has repeatedly come under fire for views that are antagonistic to American values. The 36-year-old state representative stood with her three children and husband thanking supporters.

"This is someone who has cozied up to white nationalists... we should recognize him as what he is and move the conversation beyond him, beyond this divisiveness and to a place of hope, inclusion", Omar added.

She became the first Somali American lawmaker in the country. Hassan previously worked as a mental health clinician, earning a masters in social work and public health.

In a time where Muslims are under constant attack, history-making U.S. Representative-elect Ilhan Omar of Minnesota continues to take pride in her faith.

Meanwhile, The Democratic Party's takeover of the US House of Representatives will likely result in an African-American woman becoming chair of the chamber's Africa policy sub-committee.

But even though Minnesota is home to the largest Somali population in the country, and Tlaib's state of MI has a large population of Arab and Muslim Americans, this "Muslim wave" was about more than faith or ethnicity. In 1995, they emigrated to the United States, initially settling in Arlington, Virginia and then moving to Minneapolis. Eventually, she learnt the language by watching television.

Ilhan Omar, whose platform included support for Medicare for All, criminal justice reform and the increase of minimum wage, won the seat over Republican Jennifer Zielinski. Jones lost the Democratic primary for the full term to Tlaib.
