Body of murdered British backpacker found, says New Zealand police

A man has been charged with the murder of a missing British backpacker in New Zealand, police said as the search continued Sunday for her body.

Police said they brought that man into the central Auckland police station on Saturday afternoon for questioning.

A full scene examination is now underway at a bush area on Scenic Drive, Waitakere Ranges in West Auckland.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said the body was found in bush off Scenic Drive.

"It is an unbearable time for the Millane family, and our hearts go out to them", Beard said.

"She arrived here on the 20th of November, and has been bombarding us with numerous photographs and messages of her adventures", Mr Millane said.

Ms Millane, from Wickford in Essex, graduated from the University of Lincoln in September and was on a year-long around-the-world trip.

- December 2, just before noon: A red Toyota Corolla hatchback is hired from a central Auckland rental firm.

He added that Ms Millane's family had been informed.

Ms Millane is known to have used the Tinder dating app while she was in New Zealand.

She says the situation is heartbreaking.

The last confirmed sighting of the 22-year-old was at 9.41pm the same day at the Citylife Hotel in central Auckland, when she was seen with a "male companion". I have a daughter in her 20s.

Her birthday was on Sunday, but she didn't contact her family.

"At this stage we are not able to confirm whether Grace has been located at this site".

Police have not uncovered any evidence the pair had met before.

Detectives were also still searching for some of Millane's belongings, including her passport, a pale pink Casio Baby-G watch and a silver necklace with a green stone in the middle, which were missing from the Base Backpacker hostel where she was staying.
