Former President George H.W. Bush is returning to Washington as a revered political statesman, hailed by leaders across the political spectrum and around the world as a man not only of greatness but also of uncommon decency and kindness.

Gov. Roy Cooper today ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the passing of President George H.W. Bush.

Bush, who served as 41st president, died at 10 p.m. Friday, Bush family spokesman Jim McGrath announced.

"There will be very tough times, made even more hard by criticism you may not think is fair", Bush 41 wrote, perhaps in anticipation of the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal, as some people have noticed.

He'll be interred later on Thursday at the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum on the grounds of Texas A&M University in College Station, after making the final leg, from Spring, Texas, by train.

George H.W. Bush, a World War II hero whose presidency soared with the coalition victory over Iraq in Kuwait, but then plummeted in the throes of a weak economy that led voters to turn him out of office after a single term, has died. He credited Bush's ability to negotiate with former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev as playing a key role.
