Elizabeth Warren takes major step toward running for president

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday announced her intention to run for president in 2020 as a champion of middle-class Americans and an adversary of big banks and Wall Street fat cats.

Her campaign is beginning just about six years after she first won public office, when she became the first woman to ever be elected to the Senate from MA. The move had been meant to stifle Trump's criticism of her but only engendered more mockery from him while also angering Democrats, particularly minorities who objected to her defining ethnicity via a test.

Warren's upcoming bid for the Democratic nomination was highly anticipated. "How did we get here?"

In 2016, she brushed off effort by liberal political groups to seek the presidential nomination, offering her support to Hillary Clinton.

"Every person in America should be able to work hard, play by the same set of rules, and take care of themselves and the people they love", she said.

Warren is a searing critic of the President, and Trump has responded by openly mocking her Native American heritage and referring to her as "Pocahontas". "That's a fundamental promise of America", Warren begins in the video.

Warren's possible strength in what will be a crowded contest includes her track record of speaking to economic concerns.

As a professor, she provided the intellectual basis for a consumer protection watchdog, which under legislation passed in 2010 became the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Warren appears to target voters of varied cultural, geographic and economic backgrounds with an anti-corporate, pro-worker message in her initial campaign pitch. Bernie Sanders and several other fellow senators likely to join the fray.

She said she was launching an exploratory committee for president, which would help her raise funds early in the campaign cycle.

It also suggested she had become too much of a "divisive figure", an apparent reference to the heavily publicized DNA test.

In 2012, it came to light that Mrs Warren had claimed to be part Native American when she was teaching at the University of Texas and the University of Pennsylvania.

The Cherokee Nation responded to the results at the time by arguing that "a DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship".
