After he spoke, Israel's Shin Bet security service said troops shot and wounded a suspected militant who tried to evade arrest near the Palestinian city of Ramallah.

"The Israelis say he carried out the shooting attack near Ofra last week so this is why they attacked him, but we don't believe he was involved", the relative said.

Two Border Police officers were stabbed and lightly wounded in a terror attack before dawn Thursday in the Old City of Jerusalem, before shooting dead their assailant, police and medics said.

The first of the killings came overnight on Wednesday when Israeli forces killed three Palestinians in separate operations over the span of six hours.

The attack-a drive-by shooting on Route 60, a central artery that runs through the West Bank-occurred at around 11:15am, some 5km south of the West Bank settlement of Ofra, at a bus stop next to the Giv'at Asaf outpost.

"We are searching for the terrorist".

The attacker stepped out of a auto and shot at soldiers and civilians at a bus stop near Ramallah before fleeing towards the city, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson said.

Such attacks have been repeatedly committed by Palestinians and qualified by the Israeli authorities as acts of terrorism.

Palestinian Hamas hailed Sunday's shooting, saying it proved "resistance" was still alive in the West Bank.

Two soldiers were killed and at least two other people - including another soldier - were wounded, the army said, with the attacker fleeing.

The house near Nablus where Naalwa was found was peppered with bullet holes after the raid, with furniture destroyed, an AFP journalist at the scene said.

"The climate created by the policy of repeated intrusions into the cities, the provocations against the sovereignty of the president and the lack of a horizon for peace are what led to this" flare-up, Abbas said.

Israel accuses Naalweh of shooting to death two Israelis and wounding another at an attack in a West Bank industrial zone in October.

Shortly after the baby's death was announced, Israeli troops started firing on a Palestinian vehicle north of Ramallah, which was part of their manhunt to find the multiple suspects.

Speaking from West Jerusalem, Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett said the events in the past 24 hours have been "very bloody - one that the occupied West Bank hasn't seen for a good deal of time". It said an unspecified number of other suspects were arrested.

Hamas on Thursday praised Barghouti as a "heroic martyr" and claimed credit for the December 9 attack.

Hamas has said that both men were members. It released security camera footage that shows the man lunging toward the officers and appearing to stab them.

Police identified the man as a 26-year-old Palestinian from the West Bank.
