Pelosi remains defiant on wall funding as Trump seeks fresh talks

Trump tweeted an ominous video Thursday with images of what appeared to be migrants trying to rush the border and clashing with law enforcement, beneath the words "crisis at the border", "drugs" and "crime".

Pushing back against some Democrats' calls to charge the president with misconduct and make him leave the White House, Trump said he was untouchable.

"The southern border is a unsafe, frightful disaster", he said, decrying illegal immigration, drug smuggling and human trafficking. Trump is seeking $5.6 billion to build it. None of Trump's predecessors has ever publicly advocated such a thing.

The US president told Democrats he was also considering declaring a national emergency so he could bypass US Congress and secure the funds necessary.

"I do not think that that is conclusive", Pelosi said. "I am allowed to do that".

Trump's Rose Garden appearance came after a meeting with congressional leadership at the White House as the partial government shutdown nears the two-week mark.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer told reporters the president threatened to keep the government closed for "a very long period of time, months or even years".

"Walls work", Trump wrote.

"Yes, I have. And I can do it if I want", Trump said.

A variety of strategies are being floated inside and outside the White House, among them trading wall funding for a deal on immigrants brought to the country as young people and now here illegally, or using a national emergency declaration to build the wall.

White House officials and congressional staffers will meet at 11am EST (1600 GMT) on Saturday to try to end the impasse, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said.
