On Wednesday, Netanyahu boasted of the strong ties Israel is building with Arab countries in the region.

In a bid to encourage better participation, Pompeo and others sought to broaden what was initially advertised as an Iran-centric meeting to include the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the fight against Daesh (ISIS), and the conflicts in Syria and Yemen. Israel and Oman have unofficial economic relations but not formal diplomatic relations.

Israel is trying to counter the influence carved out in Syria by Iran, which has supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the war that erupted in 2011.

Iran has also ramped up its rhetoric against Israel, promising to wipe it off the political map.

The Israeli prime minister, who has become increasingly open about the IDF's activities in the region, has yet to confirm or deny whether it was a misleading translation, a Freudian slip, a Kinsley gaffe, or something else. The Iranians say it is US -aligned forces in the region, and not they, who are belligerent.

Around 60 delegations from around the world were expected to be received by Polish President Andrzej Duda at the Royal Castle in Warsaw for the two-day event, but key participants have made a decision to skip the conference. "But Netanyahu and Gulf countries are eager to focus on Iran". "They have a very expansionist foreign policy and that destabilizes other countries", said Hook when asked whether the absence of Germany and France's top diplomats at the meeting mattered.

Russia reviewed the agenda of the conference and decided not to attend, the Foreign Ministry said in comments carried by Russian news agency Interfax.

"The result of this conference ideally would be a demonstration of Iranian isolation and unity amongst American allies in Europe and the Middle East", said William Wechsler, senior adviser for Middle East programs at the Atlantic Council in Washington. "If at the end of the day it looks like America is being isolated from its partners, then it's not as successful as you want it to be". The Jerusalem Post reports that the Trump administration is unlikely to make a big splash at the conference with an announcement of its impending Israeli-Palestinian peace plan. And yet, mixed messages continue to come from Washington.
