Shortly after 2 p.m. on Saturday in Norway (just before 6 a.m. PT), Norwegian police say they were made aware of a cruise ship in distress off the midwestern coast of Norway.
Rescuers airlifted nearly 500 of the 1,373 mostly elderly passengers from the ship in bad weather.
It's thought that five helicopters and a number of rescue ships were drafted in to provide support.
Eight people suffered injuries and three of those were thought to be in a serious condition, public broadcaster NRK reported.

The Viking Sky regained power to its engines Sunday and traveled to Molde under its own power, halting the need for further evacuations.
The Viking Sky was heading for the port of Molde, and expected to arrive during the afternoon.
"Most of our passengers are senior citizens. imagine what it's like to hang there on that wire. Therefore we would prefer to have the passengers on land rather than on board the ship", police chief Tor Andre Franck said.
The Viking Sky is a relatively new ship, delivered in 2017 to operator Viking Ocean Cruises.
Viking Cruises said it will continue to follow up with them to ensure their needs are covered.
The ship was on a 12-day cruise along Norway's coast before its scheduled arrival Tuesday in the British port of Tilbury, on the River Thames.
Shortly afterwards, the Viking Ocean Cruises company confirmed all the passengers and crew on the cruise ship were safe, and added passengers were due to fly home, departing from Molde as soon as possible.
