The iron ore exporting Port Hedland and Port Dampier in Western Australia have been cleared of commercial vessels in preparation of a severe tropical cyclone, which is expected to make landfall in the region on Sunday, the Pilbara Ports Authority said Friday.

Borroloola is almost 1000km southeast of Darwin.

"We are looking down the barrel of a significant tropical cyclone impact", Carr said.

The warning zone extends from Groote Eylandt in the north-west of the Gulf all the way inland to Tennant Creek, and across the border to Burketown on the Queensland side of the border, 500km from Borroloola.

Some 60,000 people live in the area most affected by Veronica, but the region is said to be generally well prepared for cyclones.

He believed power, water and telephone lines had been re-established at the town, and said once the Carpentaria Highway was open, the Northern Territory Government would make an announcement about when residents could return home.

The cyclone's core reached land midway between Karratha and Port Hedland this morning, and its centre is forecast to cross the coast later this afternoon or evening.

Cyclone Trevor is now a Category 3 system intensifying in the hours just before dawn.

The eye of the cyclone is estimated between 30-50km wide.

The threat to the Northern Territory from Cyclone Trevor was predicted to shift from destructive winds to flash flooding on Sunday, as residents in Western Australia's far north braced for unsafe storm surges caused by Cyclone Veronica.

The slow movement of the cyclone means that communities in its path should prepare to shelter from the destructive winds for an extended period on Sunday and Monday.

"So the emergency services team that's been pulled together by the Northern Territory is fantastic".

Residents along the Pilbara coast have been warned of Tropical Cyclone Veronica's destructive winds of up to 155km/h and wind gusts to 220km/h.

BOM meteorologist Jonathan How told Today this morning that the heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Veronica could cause flooding of up to one metre in height.

The government agency said it's been more than four years since twin cyclones have pummelled Australia at once, with the last event occurring in 2015 with Cyclones Marcia and Lam.
