Drinking piping hot tea doubles cancer risk

That's according to research conducted by scientists from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran, who have discovered a link between drinking boiling hot water and the development of cancer of the oesophagus.

Drinking 700 ml per day of tea or more at a higher temperature (60 degrees Celsius or higher) was associated with a 90% higher risk of esophageal cancer, the researchers said.

Georgina Hill, health information officer at Cancer Research UK, said: "This study adds to the evidence that having drinks hotter than 60 degrees may increase the risk of oesophageal cancer".

Drinking 700ml of tea per day at a temperature greater than or equal to 60°C was associated with a 90% higher risk of esophageal cancer.

The study of over 500,000 people found those who drink tea at 60°C or more were nearly twice as likely to develop the condition.

Researchers at the American Cancer Society looked at data from 50,000 people aged 40 to 75 over 10 years in Golestan, Iran.

"To our knowledge, this is the only large-scale prospective study in the world in which actual tea drinking temperature has been measured by trained staff". However, since the newest study does not have alcohol and tobacco in the equation, it's become far more concerning for most of us.

After following up on the participants, the researchers diagnosed 317 cases of esophageal cancer. The Royal Society of Chemistry also recommends drinking tea at 60-65 degrees, while Northumbria University found that the ideal drinking temperature of tea - 60 C - is achieved six minutes after preparation.

Other contributing factors to esophageal cancer include smoking and alcohol consumption, says the clinic.

Stephen Evans, a professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said that it was the heat that was the issue rather than the type of beverage.
