CJI Ranjan Gogoi accused of sexual harassment; denies charges in urgent hearing

The CJI had on Saturday insisted that it was a larger conspiracy to target him in the run up to hearings in some crucial hearings and stated that he would sit in his chair for the rest of his seven months and adjudicate every case which came up for hearing before him without fear or favour. Only a week prior to this alleged incident on October 3, Justice Gogoi swore in as the 46th Chief Justice of India. India's junior external affairs minister resigned past year amid accusations by 20 women of sexual harassment during his previous career as one of the country's most prominent news editors. "Why should the Attorney General for India appear is such a case?" she tweeted.

"I want to tell the citizens of this country that today, the judiciary is under a serious threat", the Chief Justice said at one point, explaining why he had convened a special sitting.

The senior lawyer tagged the story carried by newsportal The Leaflet with her tweets.

In a sworn affidavit, copies of which were sent to the residences of 22 Supreme Court judges yesterday, a former employee of the Supreme Court of India accused the chief justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, of sexual harassment and persecution. During the hearing in CJI's Court No. 1, an unfazed Justice Gogoi said the allegations are unbelievable.

The association took objection to the way the CJI, soon after the allegations surfaced on 20 April, constituted a three-judge bench, which included himself, to respond to the allegations.

The matter got listed as the first suo moto (civil) writ petition of 2019 under the case title: "Matter of Great Public Importance Touching upon the Independence of Judiciary - Mentioned by S-G Tushar Mehta".

On December 21, she was dismissed from service.

Utsav Bains said that he went to visit the CJI residence on Friday evening to inform the judge about the conspiracy, but add that he wasn't home.

All 15 Supreme Court benches Monday commenced judicial proceedings at 10:45 AM, 15 minutes after the usual time.

The Bar Association also demanded non-partisan enquiry into the matter. When I was a judge I had more. It had said, "In order to protect a judge from frivolous prosecution and unnecessary harassment, the President will consult the CJI who will consider all the materials placed before him and tender his advice to the President for giving sanction to launch prosecution or for filing FIR against the judge concerned after being satisfied in the matter". Shortly after this her husband and one of his brothers (both employees in the Delhi Police) as well as another brother (employee in the Supreme Court) lost their jobs.
