House chairman asks IRS for 6 years of Trump's tax returns

Throughout the day Thursday, the president's supporters rallied to the defense of the president.

Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House, said Mexico had done a good job in the past four days in dealing with migrants on its southern border headed to the United States. "Federal law is clear that our chairman has the legal authority to request and receive these returns and the administration has no legal basis to refuse to comply with this request".

"They can do what they want to do", he said. They use the power of government, the fear that every American has the government has become so strong they go after you because they don't politically agree with you.

Abandoning his threat to immediately seal the southern border, President Donald Trump warned instead on Thursday that he'd slap tariffs on cars coming to the USA from Mexico unless the country does more to stop the flow of migrants and drugs coming to the U.S.

Democrats insist that obtaining Trump's tax filings falls within their mandate of congressional oversight. We're working that out as - I'm always under audit it seems. Neal made the request in a letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig.

Technically, there's nothing preventing Trump from releasing his tax returns now.

The committee also authorized Cummings to issue a subpoena for White House Personnel Security Director Carl Kline to testify regarding the committee's probe into the White House security clearance process.

On March 11th, Democrats requesting documents showing "counterintelligence threats" and "leverage over the president" from The Trump Organization and over a dozen related business entities.

Neal's request was the third time in April that a Democrat-led House committee exerted oversight pressure on the president.

The president, who just a week earlier was celebrating being "exonerated" by a brief summary of Mueller's report, on Thursday accused his opponents of overreaching and said they'll have to "speak to my lawyers" and Attorney General William Barr about getting the documents.

The returns could also show whether the financial disclosures Trump was required to make as president contained key omissions.

A 1924 law authorizes the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee to request the tax returns of any citizen, although that provision has rarely been used. "And probably start off with the tariffs", Trump said.
