The National Weather Service predicted flash flooding could happen from early Friday morning to the afternoon.
Damage was heavy in the MS hamlet of Learned, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Jackson.
"We'll have several wind reports that could produce wind damage", FOX8 MAX Weather Chief Meteorologist Van Denton said. In Philadelphia, Mississippi, a wall collapsed at a medical clinic and the storm knocked down traffic signals and canopies and pushed trees onto houses, the Neshoba Democrat reported.
A low pressure system will bring the potential for strong winds, flash flooding, hail and "a few tornadoes" throughout most of the state, according to the NWS office in Raleigh.
Dozens of schools dismissed students early as a precaution in MS and Alabama, where the threat was expected to continue after nightfall.
The same system produced tornadoes and hail earlier in North Texas, the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma, southeastern Kansas and Louisiana. There could also be a limited threat of tornadoes.
The National Weather Service issued a series of tornado warnings about a front pushing eastward from Texas on Thursday. Most of the storm damage came from strong winds, as gusts neared 70 miles per hour. Flood warnings reached as far north as central Indiana.

Four suspected tornadoes have been reported in Virginia.
The main region at risk for severe weather is the area along a line between Dixon and Crystal Lake, according to the weather service.
According to WHSV's sister station, WDBJ, strong, gusty winds and a confirmed tornado in the area led to downed trees and damage to buildings. Egg-size hail was reported about 60 miles northwest of Fort Worth.
Two other people who were driving are being counted as storm-related deaths in Mississippi.
The threat comes days after dozens of tornadoes from East Texas to Georgia left at least nine dead.
