Pelosi accuses Barr of lying to Congress

The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing Thursday featuring an empty chair for Attorney General William Barr after he informed the panel he wouldn't show up for the session on special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation report. Barr said that he was not, an answer seemingly contradicted by subsequent reports that he'd previously received a letter from Mueller and spoken with the special counsel over the telephone about investigators' concerns with the summary. The Democrats are eager to press their attacks on an attorney general they accuse of acting as Trump's personal lawyer. Tuesday's Washington Post scoop about Mueller's letter brought renewed calls for his testimony, with several senators saying they want him to explain why he wrote it. Nadler's insistence on staff questioning "is inappropriate", said Department of Justice spokeswoman Kerri Kupec.

Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, a Democrat, warned Barr he will only have " a day or two... maybe by Monday" to provide that Mueller report that his committee subpoenaed. A vote of the full House on contempt would send a criminal referral to the USA attorney for the District of Columbia - a Justice Department official who is likely to defend the administration's interests.

He testified for the first time on Wednesday since the release of Mr Mueller's 448-page report.

Asked later if she believes Barr committed a crime, Pelosi replied, "He lied to Congress". Nixon resigned in 1974 over the Watergate scandal. "Nobody is above the law - not the president of the United States, not the attorney general". "It is something else entirely to allow his advisers to appear before Congress", the letter said.

Committee Democrats vowed to issue a subpoena to force Mr Barr to testify, while Mr Nadler held out hope that the Attorney-General would reconsider and show up when the hearing convenes at 9am on Thursday. But Barr refused to participate in such a hearing, setting off the showdown on Thursday. Barr cancelled his testimony after clashing with Nadler over the hearing's format.

If that negotiation fails, Nadler said he would move to hold Barr in contempt.

After his no-show, Pelosi said Barr's testimony to Congress raised "deadly serious" questions as "the attorney general of the United States of America was not telling the truth to the Congress of the United states".

Democrats are eager to hear from Mueller about the decisions he made during his investigation and his thoughts on Barr's handling of the report.

The decision to avoid a determination on obstruction caught Barr by surprise, Justice Department officials said, and he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein resolved to reach a conclusion in place of Mueller's team. Barr was also confirmed to the positions of Deputy Attorney General and Assistant Attorney General under Democrat-controlled Senates. Sen.

Barr testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday, where he defended his previous remarks to Congress by arguing that the original question posed to him was whether "members of the special counsel's team"-not Mueller-were concerned".

With an eye toward upcoming battles with House Democrats, the letter also makes clear that the White House wants to preserve all executive privilege for all future proceedings.

The report detailed extensive contacts between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Moscow and the campaign's expectation that it would benefit from Russia's actions, which included hacking and propaganda to boost Trump and harm Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
