Ruiz scores shocks Joshua for heavyweight world title

Earlier tonight (Sat. June 1, 2019) Andy Ruiz Jr. shocked the boxing world in NY. The match, which marked his first ever fight in the US, was also Joshua's first career loss.

After Joshua's surprise loss to a fighter many casual fans had either never heard of, or knew little about, reactions started pouring in on social media. All that depends on Fury swatting Germany's little-known Tom Schwarz in Las Vegas on June 15 but that looks as highly probable as Joshua battering Andy Ruiz Jr in Madison Square Garden in the early hours of this Sunday morning.

Ruiz claimed the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBA belts in one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight boxing history.

"As I always say I'm the realest champion in the business and as I've mentioned before I must handle all my controversial fights ASAP".

South Africa were in tatters chasing 312 after losing six wickets in the World Cup opener against England at The Oval in London.

Heavyweight titleholder Deontay Wilder announced Friday that he will fight a much-anticipated rematch with lineal champion Tyson Fury, assuming he first defeats Luis "King Kong" Ortiz in another rematch in the fall.

Ruiz was dropped to the canvas in the third but the heavy brawler came back to down the Brit in the same round and Joshua was lucky to survive. Again, Joshua beat the count but the bell saved the Brit from a going a second longer in his weakened state. Time was 1:27. Andy Ruiz is the new heavyweight champion!

Joshua's decision to even fight in NY seemed like a victory in itself.

Together with Briton Tyson Fury they are trying to revive the sport's prestige division but the inability to get them together in the ring had left a sour taste in the mouth of boxing fans. Wilder and Fury fought to a split draw in December in Los Angeles, with Wilder retaining his WBC heavyweight title after knocking down his British challenger twice.

Considering only Parker has gone the distance with Joshua, and Ruiz tested Parker bigtime, maybe the American will provide a challenge.
