Donovan, Shea Injured; Will Not Play In World Cup Qualifiers

LD PSL

After being named to the 24 man USMNT roster for the two upcoming World Cup qualifying matches, both Landon Donovan and Brek Shea will not suit up after further evaluation of their injuries.  Donovan injured his knee this past Saturday during the LA Galaxy’s match against Real Salt Lake.  There was an initial concern that Donovan’s injury would keep him out of the US camp, but the veteran striker/midfielder was already feeling better by Sunday, skipped his scheduled MRI and flew to Miami to join the rest of the USMNT.  Unfortunately, despite feeling fit to play, the national team physicians disagreed and shut him down.

Brek Shea, on the other hand, has been sidelined since September 29th with an abdominal strain, and will fly back to Dallas where he will continue his recovery.

During the roster selection, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann named two players, Chris Wondolowski and Terrance Boyd, as possible alternates.  However, Klinsmann has yet to announce whether or not he will add them to the team. If he chooses not to, Klinsmann will have only 22 players to choose from rather than the maximum 24.  The loss of both Donovan and Shea is a big blow, so don’t be surprised if both Boyd and Wondolowski are added before Friday.
