Union Prospect Steffen Named to Youth National Team
- Updated: February 8, 2013
Zachary Steffen, FC Delco product and Philadelphia Union Academy goalkeeper, has been named to the United States Under 20 National Team for the CONCACAF U20 Championships by head coach Tab Ramos. The tournament will be held in Puebla, Mexico from February 18th to March 3rd, as teams from throughout the region compete for a slot at the U-20 World Cup.
One of the top young keepers in the country, Steffen led the Union Academy to the 2012 Generation Adidas Cup, and backstopped the baby Nats through the 2012 Marabella Cup this past fall in Spain, earning rave reviews in both tournaments for his shot-stopping and athleticism. Steffen will likely be battling to serve as primary backup to top US Youth keeper Cody Cropper, but a strong showing could see him challenge for the lead spot.
Steffen continues a Union legacy in net for the youth national team. Chris Seitz backstopped the 2007 team that made it to the quarterfinals of the U-20 World Cup, while Zac MacMath stole the 2010 Milk Cup for the US side, as well as starting in the failed 2011 CONCACAF Championship campaign. Steffen is set to play for the University of Maryland this fall, where both Seitz and MacMath won national championships under Union Technical Director and Goalkeeping Coach Rob Vartughian. The US has not qualified for the U-20 World Cup, or any youth world championship tournament, since 2009.
The U-20 coach Ramos’ full roster follows:
