CB Brandon Hughes was released from the Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles have released cornerback Brandon Hughes, the club said Saturday. Hughes release doesn’t come as a surprise, the 4th-year player appeared in all 16 games for Philadelphia last season, but he was actually cut in training camp prior to the 2013 season, and appeared to be on the fringe throughout his time with Chip Kelly and company. He had several chances to earn playing time the past few seasons with the Eagles’ secondary struggles, but never seemed to make much of an impression.

It is unclear just how injured Hughes is, but there was widespread speculation that Hughes wouldn’t be released until he was healthy enough to pass a physical. The Philadelphia secondary has been battered in the first 3 weeks of the year, and turmoil is still reigning in the defensive backfield. The release of Hughes should help the Eagles NFL Betting Lines for Sundays game. However, Mortensen’s assertion that it was an injury settlement muddies the waters, and we likely won’t know his physical state until (or unless) he attempts to latch on with another NFL team.

Brandon Hughes has been a key contributor on special teams and a solid reserve cornerback since joining the Eagles midway through the 2010 campaign. Originally a fifth-round selection of the Chargers in 2009, Hughes spent his rookie campaign on the Injured Reserve list with a knee injury before landing on the New York Giants practice squad for the first ten games of the 2010 season.
