Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants kick off NFL season

The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants bitter NFC East rivals will kick the NFL season tonight in primetime.  The NFL opener in recent years has seen the Super Bowl champ open at home on a Thursday night. The NFL  moved the game to Wednesday night so the game would not conflict with President Barack Obama’s acceptance speech Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention.

The last time there was an NFL game on a Wedneseday was Sept. 22, 1948, when the LA Rams beat the Detroit Lions 44-7.  It was the season opener for both teams. It was the second game of the 1948 season as the league kicked off on the previous Friday with the Green Bay Packers traveling to Boston and beating the Boston Yanks 31-0.

New York has had the edge in recent years winning 7 of 9 meetings (including playoffs). In Eli Manning’s 15 games against Dallas he has thrown 31 touchdowns.  Manning’s numbers in his last two games against the Cowboys were MVP like as he went  51 of 80 for 746 yards  with five touchdowns and one interception.

On the flip side Dallas QB Romo hasn’t had the best of games against the Giants, from  2009 to 2011, Dallas went 0-5 with Romo under center, and he passed for an avgerage of 233 yards per game. All of those losses aren’t just Romo having a bad but the Giants defense feasting on Romo. Romo was sacked nine times in his two games against the Giants.  Six those sacks came for the Gaints as they clinched the NFC East title beating the Cowboys to end the season.

The Cowboys looking to counter the New York blitz by switching  Tyron Smith and NFL vet Doug Free into different slots. Putting Smith to left tackle and Free to the right side. Now Smith will  face Jason Pierre-Paul head to head.  Smith has a chance to have the game of his life or get pushed out of the way like so many other o-lineman.

The teams have squared of five times in season openers, and the Cowboys won all five.  In 2007 they opened their seasons against each other and Dallas won that game 45-35.  The Cowboys finished 13-3 and won the NFC East but lost their home playoff game to the WildCard Gaints 10-6.  The Giants moved on and won the Super Bowl two games later.
