One night after being shutout for the 10th time this season, the Phillies rebounded with seven runs against the Marlins. They were helped by errors and wild pitches on the Marlins’ part, but the Phils will take it. They snapped their three game losing streak in the process.

They jumped ahead in the bottom of the first when Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley both walked. Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia bounced a throw to third, attempting to throw Rollins out. The ball skipped away from Casey McGehee, and Rollins crossed the plate for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Marlon Byrd stepped up and hit a line drive, two run home run to left center-field to give the Phils a 3-0 lead.

They added a fourth run the next inning, when Ben Revere tripled with one out. He would score on a wild pitch by Marlins’ starter Andrew Heaney. An error and a wild pitch led to two unearned runs for the Phillies early on.

The Phillies chased Heaney from the game in the sixth, after Howard led off with a double. Byrd then reached on an error by second baseman Derek Dietrich. Third baseman Cody Asche continued his hot hitting with a two run double, making it 6-2 Phillies. Asche would advance to third on a ground out by Revere, and then scored on a wild pitch by Marlins’ reliever Bryan Morris.

Asche now has five runs batted in and seven hits since his return to the big league club on June 20th.

Rookie David Buchanan made the start tonight for the Phillies, and he allowed two earned runs on six hits and four walks in five innings. It was short outing for Buchanan, and while he wasn’t sharp, he worked out of trouble to hold the lead.

The Phillie bullpen made the lead stand up, save for a two run home run allowed by B.J. Rosenberg in the eighth. Mario Hollands, Ken Giles, Rosenberg, Jake Diekman and Jonathan Papelbon combined to allow two runs on four hits in four innings. Papelbon earned the save, while Diekman & Hollands each earned a hold.

If not for the wild pitches from the Marlins, the Phillies would have only scored five runs. They went 2-11 with runners in scoring position, and left five men on base. Still, a night after getting shutout yet again, the Phils will take runs any way they can get them.

They’re right back at it tomorrow night when A.J. Burnett takes the mound. First pitch slated for 7:05.
