A Minus

The Phillies landed in Oakland last night for a series with another team who once called Philadelphia home, the Athletics.

An old fashioned pitcher’s duel unfolded, as David Buchanan faced off against Jon Lester.

Unfortunately for the Phils, Lester would get the better of the matchup on this night.

Lester allowed one earned run on five hits in seven strong innings. He struck out seven Phillies, while walking just two. The Phils’ lone run came in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Ryan Howard.

Buchanan would go 6.2 innings, allowing six hits and three runs. The A’s did all their scoring in the second inning thanks to three straight singles that resulted in runs.

Buchanan struck out six while also walking two. His 2014 record is now 6-8, with a 3.77 earned run average.

The Phils left two men in scoring position, and five on base total.  They had only two real threats, one in the first inning and the other in the eighth.

Other than that, chances were few and far between. Athletics’ pitching allowed a total of six hits on the night, and the bullpen allowed just one base runner.

The current and former Philadelphia squads meet up again this afternoon, with Jerome Williams taking the hill for the Phillies. Drew Pomeranz goes for the A’s. First pitch 4:05.
