Jerome Williams showed again today why he deserves to be in the Phillies 2015 starting rotation.

Since joining the Phils, all he’s done is throw quality starts and keep the opposition honest. He’s gone at least six innings and allowed two runs or less in four of his last six starts.

Today was more of the same, as Williams allowed only four hits to the Oakland Athletics in seven shutout innings.

The Phillies had some early threats, but were unable to score against A’s starter Drew Pomeranz. Though some long innings early on helped to chase Pomeranz after five innings.

The Phils broke through in the seventh inning when shortstop Freddy Galvis hit a two out, two run home run to right field.

Marlon Byrd added an RBI single in the eighth inning to make it a 3-0 Phillies’ lead.

Antonio Bastardo worked a scoreless eighth, and Ken Giles would take the ball in the ninth inning on his 24th birthday.

Giles earned his first career save in the major leagues, nailing down the 3-0 win for Williams, his fourth as a Phillie.

The Phils look to take the series tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 eastern time. A.J. Burnett looks to avoid his 18th loss of the season against Scott Kazmir for Oakland.
