BREAKING: American International Clint Dempsey Signs With Tottenham Hotspur

admin Last updated on: February 17, 2024

After weeks of speculation and rumor, Clint Dempsey finally has a new home.  The American international, who expressed interest in signing with a Champions League caliber team last season, signed with Tottenham earlier today with former squad Fulham reportedly getting around £6 Million pounds.  Fox Soccer is reporting that Dempsey himself has signed a three year 9.6 million dollar contract.

There wasn’t a lack of excitement during today’s deadline day.  Aston Villa had put in a bid for Dempsey earlier this morning, but were turned down by Fulham, opening the door for Liverpool, who were favorites to pick the star forward. However, the offer Liverpool put in for Dempsey was less than stellar; somewhere in the range of £4 million pounds.  All of a sudden a move to Liverpool was looking grim and whispers from Tottenham started leaking through that they had an interest in acquiring Dempsey.

With the deadline fast approaching, it looked like after all the drama, Dempsey would be staying in Fulham after all, but about an hour before the deadline, Dempsey was said to be at the Spurs training facility, and the rest as they say is history.

While Dempsey will most likely be eligible to play for Tottenham in tomorrow’s match against Norwich City, it is less likely he will start or make the 18 man roster.  Two weeks into the BPL season, Dempsey has not seen the pitch once due to the deteriorated relationship between himself and Fulham.  It will probably take the 29 year old a couple of weeks to get into full form.  The most likely scenario will probably see Dempsey coming off the bench or starting in Tottenham’s next fixture against Reading on September 15th.  Dempsey had 23 overall goals last season and was named the Fulham player of the year.  He is also one of the USMNT’s most important attackers, with 27 goals to his name in 87 career appearances.
