David Beckham finished his MLS career in fashion this fall leading LA Galaxy to back-to-back titles. Many of us knew he wasn’t done and had a lot football left in the tank. We all made several predictions as where he would go and it is no surprise that he is headed to PSG in France. The French club has opened up the bank this season with record signings. From what I know he on his way to Paris to complete a medical and finalize the terms of the contract.
The press conference to introduce the English midfielder is expected to be at 11 AM EST (4 PM BST ). The 37-year-old Beckham received several offers over past few weeks but being reunited with is former AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti played a key part in the signing. Beckham spent parts of 2009 and 2010 on loan with the Italian giants, appearing in 29 games and scoring two goals.
Beckham did hit one of his biggest walls while at Milan, in early 2010 he tore his left Achilles tendon against Chievo Verona. This set back caused him to miss the World Cup that summer as well as the most of the MLS season. He did return to action Sept. 11, 2010 with LA to finish off the season help the club win the Western Conference title.
Beckham’s role may be limited with his new club, but with PSG in Champions League knockout stages the club will need some leadership and extra legs. Beckham will also have the chance to play with one the best play-making finishers in the game, Zlatan Ibrahimović.
The Swedish international joined PSG on July 17, 2012, for an initial transfer fee of around €20 million ($ 27 million), making Ibrahimović the most expensive footballer in combined transfer fees.
No matter how you look at this deal, Beckham left MLS in good hands and his impact was only positive. His record signing with LA in 2007 was questioned at first, but now looking back it was worth every penny. MLS has grown since he joined in 2007, new clubs like Seattle, Philadelphia, Portland and Montreal have joined the league.
